Supporting Ill, Injured, and Abandoned Mammals: Key Contacts & Other Resources

Living in The Village at Castle Pines means sharing our community with spectacular wildlife. While other blogs covered general assistance and special handling situations, knowing exactly who to call can make all the difference in an emergency. Below is a comprehensive directory of contacts and resources to help you navigate encounters with distressed mammals safely and legally.

Who to Call: Animal Size & Response Protocols

The size and type of the mammal you encounter dictates the best course of action and the appropriate agency to contact:

  • Large and Medium Mammals: For large mammals such as elk, deer, and bears, as well as medium-sized mammals like bobcats, foxes, and coyotes, Emergency Services (303-688-6447) is your primary contact. Emergency Services maintains direct contact with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and can respond quickly to the situation.
  • Small Mammals: If you find an injured or abandoned small mammal—which includes squirrels, raccoons, bats, and rabbits—the best first step is to contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for expert advice.

Critical Rabies Safety & Legal Limits

When dealing with potentially sick or injured wildlife, safety and legal parameters must always come first.

  • Rabies Vector Warnings: Due to the severe risk of rabies, an injured or ill bat or skunk should not be approached for any reason, even if the animal appears entirely docile. Do not approach or touch them.
  • When to Call Emergency Services Immediately: You must contact Emergency Services (303-688-6447) for any injured or ill mammals that are potential rabies vectors, including bats, skunks, or any other animal that appears disoriented or aggressive.
  • Understanding Legal Boundaries: Knowing the legal limits is essential; possessing wildlife without proper state licensing is strictly illegal. However, residents are legally permitted to transport a small, injured animal to a veterinarian or a licensed rehabilitator during an emergency, provided the transport is entirely safe for both the person and the animal. Note: By law, this transport exception does not apply to skunks.
