What is Firewise USA® Community Certification?

Firewise USA® is a national initiative administered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that helps communities establish a structured framework to enhance safety and improve emergency readiness. The program offers proven methods for identifying hazards, reducing ignition risks, and bolstering preparedness prior to an emergency event.

There are many benefits of certification:

  • Identification of ignition risks around homes and community spaces guides property owners to improve their fire prevention efforts
  • Effective vegetation management, intentional landscaping, and superior home maintenance practices diminish the probability of structural ignition.
  • Community education and responsibility help residents stay informed during high-risk situations.
  • Insurance providers recognize Firewise communities and may offer reduced premiums, increased availability of coverage, or other incentives. (If you would like a certification letter to send to your insurance company, please contact the CPHA Compliance Coordinator at Kolsen@TheVillageCastlePines.com)

Process of Certification

The Castle Pines Homes Association Compliance Coordinator and members of the Forestry Committee dedicated substantial time, effort, and coordination to meet program standards. These steps included:

  • Community Risk Assessment, which identified vulnerable structures, dense fuels, and mitigation opportunities.
  • Defensible Space Improvements, including enhanced landscaping to incorporate more fire-resistant plant varieties, the removal of dead or overgrown vegetation and tree limbs, and maintenance aimed at establishing safer spacing around homes.
  • Common Area Fuel Mitigation, which was an undertaking of large-scale clearing projects in open spaces, removal of brush and deadfall, tree thinning, and improved access for emergency vehicles
  • Fire-Resistant Home Maintenance, which includes efforts of gutter-cleaning, replacement of vulnerable materials, and the protection of roofs, vents, and decks to blowing embers
  • Ongoing Education and Engagement, including workshops, meetings, and campaigns to help homeowners understand wildfire behavior, emergency plans, and maintain property-level mitigation over time.
  • Annual Investment in Wildfire Safety maintains the Firewise status through documentation of wildfire-risk-reduction activities to ensure continual progress, rather than stopping at the certification.

Why This is Important

Located on the Front Range of the Colorado mountains, the area is vulnerable to unpredictable wildfire hazards. Firewise USA® Community Certification demonstrates that our community has taken measures to prepare for such situations.

The Village at Castles Pines is now one of nineteen communities in Douglas County, Colorado, with this certification (for more certification information, go to the Firewise USA® website here Firewise USA). This distinction positions us as one of the leading gated communities in the Denver area regarding wildfire prevention and preparedness. The Community Certification reflects our commitment to maintaining the safety and security of our residents.

Certification means more than just a piece of paper; it means we care. By taking proactive steps today, the Village has not only reduced its exposure to wildfire risk, but also created a safer, more resilient environment for generations to come.
