Few things feel more like Colorado than the holiday season. The air is crisp, snow dusts the Front Range, and the metro area fills with lights, markets, and traditions that families return to year after year.

Dates and details below were confirmed as of early October 2026. Schedules can change, so check each event’s website before you go.
Denver Zoo Lights is one of the city’s most beloved holiday traditions. Each year, the zoo grounds are transformed with millions of lights and illuminated, animal-themed sculptures that glow along the pathways after dark.
Families will find plenty of extras, including seasonal treats and hot chocolate. Last season’s Zoo Lights ran from late November into early January, with a cocoa-and-ride bundle available at checkout.
Tip: Buy timed tickets in advance, and consider a weeknight visit to avoid the biggest crowds. Dress warmly, as the best views are outdoors. Check the Denver Zoo’s website for this season’s dates, ticketing, and any Santa visit schedule.
If you prefer a quieter evening, Blossoms of Light at the York Street gardens is a lovely alternative. The gardens become a glowing winter landscape, with illuminated plant sculptures, lit pathways, and themed garden areas to explore.
It’s a relaxed outing for couples, friends, and families with younger children. Seasonal food and drink, including hot chocolate and holiday treats, make it easy to linger. This year’s run is scheduled for November 20, 2026 through January 10, 2027, closed November 26 and December 25. Check the Botanic Gardens’ website for ticketing and any special events.
The 52nd annual 9NEWS Parade of Lights takes place in downtown Denver on Saturday, December 5, 2026. This free, family-friendly event features illuminated floats, marching bands, and specialty groups, and it draws huge crowds, with roughly 200,000 attending last year.
Viewing tip: Arrive early, and if you have little ones, choose a spot away from the busiest blocks. Check the Downtown Denver Partnership’s website for the start time and route.
Downtown Denver is at its best in December, and a few stops make for an easy day or evening out.
Union Station. The historic terminal hosts an annual Grand Illumination, when its 40-foot outdoor Christmas tree, strung with more than 7,000 lights, is lit for the season. In recent years the evening has included live music, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and hot chocolate. This year, Santa returns to the Great Hall every Sundays from November 29 thru December 20. As always, check Denver Union Station’s website for details before you head out.
Denver Christkindlmarket. This German-style holiday market returns to the Tivoli Quad at the Auraria Campus from November 20 through December 23, 2026. Admission is free. Expect artisan vendors, unique gifts, live music, and seasonal food and drink. Hours will be posted on the market’s website closer to opening.
Outdoor ice skating. The rink at McGregor Square near Coors Field is a popular place to lace up a pair of skates downtown. A word of caution: the Downtown Denver Rink at Skyline Park is closed for renovation during the park’s redevelopment and is expected to return in 2027, so be sure to head to McGregor Square instead. You can make reservations on their website.
Denver’s performing arts scene hosts two of its longest-running holiday traditions.
Tickets for both often sell well in advance, so plan ahead if you have a favorite date.
You don’t have to head into the city to feel the holiday spirit.
Castle Rock Starlighting. A south-metro tradition just minutes from the Village, the Castle Rock Star lighting takes place on Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. in downtown Castle Rock. The afternoon includes vendor and nonprofit booths, a Kids Zone, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and free hot chocolate. It ends with the lighting of the Star on the rock, followed by fireworks, conditions permitting.
Holiday in the Pines. The Village also has its own community celebration, a chance to gather with neighbors close to home, traditionally held at the Village Lake Fitness Center. Check the Village’s event calendar and resident emails for this year’s details.
Local shopping, dining, and winter fun. Castle Pines and Castle Rock offer holiday shopping, cozy dining, and winter activities. In the Village it is very convenient to shop at the Village Shoppes, just outside the gates where Happy Canyon meets highway 85.
The Village sits along the I-25 corridor, which puts Zoo Lights, the Botanic Gardens, Union Station, and downtown Denver within about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Castle Rock’s festivities are just minutes away, so you can enjoy the best of the city and the south metro without spending your evening on the road.
Then, when the evening is over, you come home to something Denver’s busiest streets cannot offer: the quiet of a gated community, surrounded by mature trees and mountain views, with Emergency Services on duty around the clock. It’s the best of both worlds, with the city’s festivities within reach and a close-knit neighborhood to return to. And when you are ready to head out beyond the city, see our favorite day trips from the Village.
Denver’s holiday season is often best enjoyed as a resident rather than a visitor. When the lights, markets, and traditions are a short drive from your front door, you can enjoy them throughout the season at your own pace.
If you are considering a move to the Denver area, we invite you to explore life in The Village at Castle Pines. Connect with a local real estate professional to learn about homes currently available, and sign up for our email list to learn more about life in the Village.
Event dates, times, and ticketing are subject to change. Many of the events above are not hosted by the Village at Castle Pines Homes Association. Please confirm details with the event organizers.
